Astoria Or Anecdotes of an Enterprise Beyond the Rocky Mountains Washington Irving Books Reviews
Anyone, from youth to professor to expert on native american studies must read this book. It is extremely well written novel based on actual accounts of events written closer in time to those events than any other book. If your interest is in the early discovery of the west, the fur trade and the affect on native americans and all early accounts of the natve americans, different tribes and the affect of the first white visitors on those tribes. The immense difficulties of the first white explorers. Also, the origin and life of american legend John Jacob Astor and his vision to take over the western fur trade. If you enjoy the early explorer, lewis and clark, mountain man, native american genra this book is required enjoyment.
I'm a history nut and have been taking advantage of many free books that are in the public domain on . One of these is Washington Irving's account of the fur trading enterprise tha t John Jacob Astor established at the mouth of the Columbia River which is now known as Astoria Oregon.
I really expected this fairly long book to be a somewhat dry account of a frontier business enterprise, but it turned out to be anything but that!
Even though Irving was not along on their encounters with foreign competitors and both hostile and friendly Indians, he really brought thestory to life. The adventures of these hardy souls have probably supplied Hollywood scriptwriters with thousands of ideas that made their way into the hundreds of Western and Frontier tales that have rolled out of tinseltown in the last 100 years. If you didn't know this was written in the mid 1800's you would think Irving had plagiarized more modern writers!
Being familiar only with Washington Irving's iconic works of fiction I was skeptical that he could write in this format. He hits it out of the park.
It's a fascinating read and I highly recommend it. Also, you can't beat the price
Did you know about this trip across our country? I did not; had never heard anything about it before. If one enjoys travel, adventure writing and/or history, this book hits on all cylinders. I think it would make a great movie. Without giving anything away, prior to Lewis & Clark, John Astor wanted to corner the fur market in what is now the U.S. Northwest. Astor sent two exploratory parties to the area one via ship down and around South America and the other overland into the wilderness. This book recounts both epic adventures. Well worth your time to read!!
The book describes the people and events related to the establishment of Fort Astoria as a fur trading center in 1811. Much of the book is devoted to chronicling trips financed by John Jacob Astor by sea and by land to and from this location near the mouth of the Columbia River. The hardships endured and the resourcefulness displayed by these pioneers are amazing. Washington Irving was asked to write this book by Mr. Astor, who provided the author with a lot of correspondence and other information to consolidate and organize. The author gives a lot of praise to Mr. Astor, who was a friend of his, but representatives of Mr. Astor who made questionable business decisions that seemed inconsistent with his vision are sharply criticized. The author is clearly biased in his treatment of Mr. Astor; but most, if not all, of the praise appears to be warranted.
The wonderful search tool enables the reader to determine that this book uses the word "savage" 204 times and the word "savages" 107 times to refer to the Sioux, Crow and other tribes of Native Americans. This would not be considered politically correct today, but it is clear that Mr. Irving is treating Native Americans fairly. They are described in numerous anecdotes; when they do something noble or unselfish, they are praised, and when they do something devious, they are criticized.
Although the book was written 177 years ago, it is very readable. I had to look up a few more words than normal because sometimes Mr. Irving uses words differently than we do today (an example is tarpaulin, which Mr. Irving uses as a synonym for sailor), but his style is very enjoyable. It is an entertaining and positive reflection of his times that he completely refrains from using four-letter words except for two occasions, "D-d" and "D-n," when he was quoting people. I like his use of "amalgamate" as a euphemism, and I like the way he skillfully uses Biblical references and metaphors.
