(PLEASE NOTE This long-form journalism article is now available as a long chapter in the book "Louise Brooks, Frank Zappa, & Other Charmers & Dreamers." This 400-page book contains much more as well and is available on ) The Men With the Golden Ears is a time capsule of the golden age of digital remastering which took place in the mid-1980s until iTunes and MP3s swamped the CD market in the last decade. Three names surfaced early in this special moment Steve Hoffman of MCA then DCC, Bill Inglot of Rhino Records, and Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. Tom Graves, the editor of Rock & Roll Disc magazine during those years, a publication devoted to compact discs, interviewed Hoffman and Inglot at length and for American Airlines' in-flight magazine flew to California to report on Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. This mini-book includes these interviews and article and will delight both audiophiles and those who love popular music with this peek behind the veil of an all-too-often unappreciated art form -- digital remastering.

To think because some guys master music, i.e....make their jobs seem like they're some kind of scientific engineering gig is laughable. Neither of these guys have anything to do with the iconic albums they remaster for their respective labels. If either of them messed with an album I made I'd send my label a ceae and desist. The one who says he "puts life into the music" is hilarious. Yeah, Dylan had no life in his music. Frankly, most people love the imperfections in iconic albums and people should not mess with history. Then repackage on a 10 sent gold CD and let the sucker with the $5K speaker wires and RCA's think they're listeing to something special. In the end music appreciation is the most subjective art around. "Golden Ears" huh? Yeah, I haven't seen either of their names on even a 500K sold Gold album. Oh well, at least it helps some artists get more royalty money. The book? It's pretentious and seems to be written by some audiophile fan-boy. At least you don't have to pay for it if you have Prime.Product details

I like it, but it's not for everyone, unless you look at the sound engineer behind a CD before you buy like me, else i'm not sure if you want to enter their world.
Nevertheless it's short enough so worth it anyway
